Waterloo is located at 43°11′1″N 88°59′23″W / 43.18361°N 88.98972°W / 43.18361; -88.98972, (43.18366, -88.989965)[6] at the intersection of Wisconsin Highway 89 and Wisconsin Highway 19 in northwestern Jefferson County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.91 square miles (10.13 km2), of which, 3.83 square miles (9.92 km2) is land and 0.08 square miles (0.21 km2) is water.[1]

As of 2000 the median income for a household in the city was $50,221, and the median income for a family was $56,446. The per capita income for the city was $23,011. About 5.0% of families and 4.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.8% of those under age 18 and 7.1% of those age 65 or over.

Westfield, Wisconsin

Westfield is a village in Marquette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,254 at the 2010 census. The village is located mostly within the Town of Westfield. A small portion extends east into the adjacent Town of Harris.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.59 square miles (4.12 km2), of which, 1.56 square miles (4.04 km2) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,254 people, 523 households, and 321 families residing in the village. The population density was 803.8 inhabitants per square mile (310.3/km2). There were 578 housing units at an average density of 370.5 per square mile (143.1/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 96.4% White, 0.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.

Winneconne, Wisconsin

Winneconne is a village in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,383 at the 2010 census. The village is located within the Town of Winneconne. Developed along the Wolf River, the city is in the middle of the Wolf Chain of lakes, including Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts. It is host to numerous bass fishing tournaments.

This area was originally occupied by succeeding cultures of indigenous peoples. The historic Menominee people were settled in the area at the time of European encounter. French fur traders from Quebec were among the first to interact with them, followed by Catholic Jesuit missionaries. The area was ruled by Great Britain as part of the Province of Quebec and then acquired by the United States.

Winneconne's European-American settlement began in the mid-19th century with Yankees who migrated from New England and the Northern Tier, added to by waves of immigrants: Irish, Germans, and Norwegians. Originally, Winneconne had many different spellings: Winneconnah, Winnekonah, Wau-nau-ko, and Winnikning, which were transliterations from the Menominee and other Indian names for the site. The Indian meanings of these names ranged from "land of dirty water" to "land of skull and bones", referring to a prehistoric burial mound known as Butte des Morts by the French. In 1851 the recently constituted village board officially settled the spelling of the name as Winneconne.

Zenda, Wisconsin

Zenda is an unincorporated community in the Town of Linn, Walworth County, Wisconsin, United States.[1] It is located south of Lake Geneva and just north of the Illinois border. Its ZIP code is 53195.[2]

Watertown, Wisconsin

Watertown is a city in Dodge and Jefferson counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Most of the city's population is in Jefferson County. Division Street, several blocks north of downtown, marks the county line. The population of Watertown was 23,861 at the 2010 census.[6] Of this, 15,402 were in Jefferson County, and 8,459 were in Dodge County.

Watertown was first settled by Timothy Johnson, who built a cabin on the west side of the Rock River in 1836. He was born in Middleton, Middlesex County, Connecticut, on the 28th of June, 1792.[7] A park on the west side of the city is named in his honor. The area was settled to utilize the power of the Rock River, which falls 20 feet (6.1 m) in two miles (two 10-foot (3.0 m) dams). In contrast, the Rock River falls only 34 feet (10 m) in 58 miles (93 km) upstream from Watertown.[8] The water power was first used for sawmills, and later prompted the construction of two hydroelectric dams, one downtown (where the river flows south) and one on the eastern edge of the city (where the river flows north).

In the 1850s, immigrants arrived in Watertown from Germany. These people were fleeing revolutions and turmoil in Germany, which often saw pogroms against the wealthy. It was deemed better to be poor or middle class in America than it was to be wealthy in Germany, as a result most of the German immigrants who arrived in Watertown brought with them the trappings of the German middle class, including a proclivity for classical music, the Latin language and ornate furniture. Unlike other instances in other parts of the country in which they faced discrimination and xenophobia, they were welcomed with open arms by the English-Puritan descended "Yankee" population of Watertown and Jefferson County as a whole. This warm reception led to chain migration, which in turn greatly increased the German population of the region. Culturally they had much in common with the New England derived population, for instance both groups unanimously opposed slavery and both had a pronounced love for commerce and industry. Economically both communities would thrive in Watertown for the entirety of the 19th century, not facing any measurable economic hardships until the Great Depression in the following century.[9]

Weyauwega, Wisconsin

Weyauwega is a city in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,900 at the 2010 census.[4] The city is located mostly within the Town of Weyauwega, though it is politically independent of the town. Small portions extend north into the adjacent Town of Royalton. The city is commonly referred to as "Wega" by local residents. The name "Weyauwega" (/waɪ.əˈwiːɡə/ wy-ə-WEE-gə) means "Here we rest" because the town's origin was a stopping/resting point between two rivers when Indians had to portage their canoes. A fur trader built a small building at the location, from which the town later grew.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,900 people, 746 households, and 473 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,202.5 inhabitants per square mile (464.3/km2). There were 815 housing units at an average density of 515.8 per square mile (199.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.4% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.6% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.1% of the population.

There were 746 households of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.6% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.

Winter, Wisconsin

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 313 people, 153 households, and 75 families residing in the village. The population density was 391.3 inhabitants per square mile (151.1/km2). There were 209 housing units at an average density of 261.3 per square mile (100.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 91.7% White, 1.3% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 1.0% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.1% of the population.

There were 153 households of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.4% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 51.0% were non-families. 43.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.87.

The median age in the village was 41.6 years. 25.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.7% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% were from 45 to 64; and 21.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 51.4% male and 48.6% female.

Waukau, Wisconsin

Waukau is an unincorporated census-designated place in the town of Rushford, in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States.[2][3] The community is located on Wisconsin Highway 116 at its south terminus at Wisconsin Highway 91. As of the 2010 census, its population is 255.[4]

As of the census[5] of 2000, the population of Waukau, Wisconsin was 178 people, 85 male and 93 female with a median age of 36.6, 9% under 5 years, 75.8% 18 years and over, and 11.2% 65 years and over.

Average household size was 2.54. Average family size was 3.00. Total housing units was 73, 95.9% occupied. Of those occupied, 81.4% were owner-occupied, 18.6% renter occupied. Vacant housing units were 4.1%.

Weyerhaeuser, Wisconsin

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.95 square miles (2.46 km2), of which 0.94 square miles (2.43 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 238 people, 116 households, and 60 families residing in the village. The population density was 253.2 inhabitants per square mile (97.8/km2). There were 142 housing units at an average density of 151.1 per square mile (58.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.9% White, 0.4% Native American, 0.8% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.

There were 116 households of which 20.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 48.3% were non-families. 42.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.83.

Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Dells is a city in south-central Wisconsin, with a population of 2,678 people as of the 2010 census.[8] It straddles four counties: Adams, Columbia, Juneau, and Sauk. The city takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic, glacially formed gorge that features striking sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River. Together with the nearby village of Lake Delton, the city forms an area known as "the Dells", a popular Midwestern tourist destination.[9]

Wisconsin Dells was founded as Kilbourn City in 1857 by Byron Kilbourn, who also founded Kilbourntown, one of the three original towns at the confluence of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers that joined to become Milwaukee. Before the establishment of Kilbourn City, the region around the dells of the Wisconsin River was primarily a lumbering area until 1851, when the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad was chartered, with Kilbourn as its president. The railroad made plans to bridge the Wisconsin River near the river's dells, and a boomtown named Newport sprang up at the expected site of the bridge in 1853. The population of this new city quickly swelled to over 2,000, but when the railroad finally came through the area in 1857 it took nearly everyone by surprise by crossing the river a mile upstream from the site of Newport. As a result, Newport was rapidly turned into a ghost town as the settlers flocked to the new city at the site of the railroad bridge, Kilbourn City. The land at the point of crossing was originally owned by Parley Eaton. Byron Kilbourn bought the land from Eaton for a reduced price as everyone expected the railroad to cross at Newport. However, Kilbourn then went to Madison and lobbied the state to allow for the railroad right-of-way to be moved to cross at the point where he owned the land and greatly increased its value. Gradually, tourism became a large part of Kilbourn City. To make it easier for tourists to identify Kilbourn City with the natural landscape for which it was famous, the name of the city was changed to Wisconsin Dells in 1931. As the twentieth century progressed, new attractions began to draw even more tourists.

Because of the scenery provided by the dells of the Wisconsin River, Kilbourn City quickly became a popular travel destination in the Midwest. In 1856, Leroy Gates began taking tourists on boat tours of the Wisconsin Dells. These tours were given using wooden rowboats until 1873 when the first steamboat, the Modocawanda, was used. In 1875, early landscape photographer H. H. Bennett established a studio in the city and took many photos of the sandstone formations in the dells, including stereoscopic views. Prints of these photographs were distributed across the United States, further enhancing the status of Kilbourn City as a destination for sightseers. Taking advantage of this, Bennett began offering to take souvenir pictures of visitors to the dells, becoming one of the first to capitalize on the area's burgeoning tourist trade. Today, the H. H. Bennett Studio is an historic site operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society.
