Williamsburg, New Mexico

Williamsburg is a village in Sierra County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 527 at the 2000 census. The village, though small, is located conveniently adjacent to Truth or Consequences, and has essentially become a suburb. Though the town is experiencing moderate growth now, especially along I-25, in the near future there is a high possibility of its becoming a booming bedroom community for lakesiders from Elephant Butte.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 527 people, 264 households, and 153 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,096.2 people per square mile (423.9/km2). There were 345 housing units at an average density of 717.6 per square mile (277.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 91.84% White, 1.71% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 1.90% from other races, and 3.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.09% of the population.

There were 264 households out of which 15.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.00 and the average family size was 2.51.

New Mexico State Road 52

New Mexico State Road 52 is an 88.6 mi (142.6 km) state highway in Socorro County, NM. It runs approximately north–south. Its northern terminus is near the Very Large Array and connects with U.S. Route 60 between the towns of Magdalena, NM to the east and Datil, NM to the west. For much of its length, it is running west of the two southern sections of the Magdalena District of Cibola National Forest, as well as running east of Gila National Forest. For approximately 30 miles or so nearest to its southern terminus, it runs east from Winston, NM. Its southern terminus is in Truth or Consequences, NM. For the two miles nearest to the southern terminus, the road is also designated New Mexico State Road 181 (near the Truth or Consequences Municipal Airport). It is a paved 2 lane road north to the NM 59 junction and is graded dirt road for approximately 40-45 miles from near the junction of NM 59 to the VLA.

Yah-ta-hey, New Mexico

Yah-ta-hey (Navajo: Tʼáá Bííchʼį́įdii) is a census-designated place (CDP) in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2000 census, the CDP population was 580. The English name for this place is an approximation of a Navajo greeting, though the Navajo name means "like the devil", in reference to J.B. Tanner who operated the trading post located here.[1][2][3]

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 580 people, 156 households, and 138 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 146.3 people per square mile (56.6/km²). There were 180 housing units at an average density of 45.4 per square mile (17.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 69.31% Native American, 16.21% White, 0.34% Asian, 8.10% from other races, and 6.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.90% of the population.

There were 156 households out of which 51.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% were married couples living together, 24.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 10.9% were non-families. 9.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.72 and the average family size was 3.91.

Artesia, New Mexico

Artesia is a city in Eddy County, New Mexico, United States, centered at the intersection of U.S. Route 82 and U.S. Route 285; the two highways serve as the city's Main Street and First Street, respectively. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 11,301.[2]

The town assumed its present name in 1903, after the discovery of an artesian aquifer in the area; artesian wells for agriculture flourished in the area until the aquifer became significantly depleted in the 1920s. The city was officially incorporated in 1905. It is home to one of the two Strangite meeting places in the world.[3]

Artesia is located in northern Eddy County at 32°50′34″N 104°24′44″W / 32.84278°N 104.41222°W / 32.84278; -104.41222 (32.842744, -104.412315),[5] at an elevation of 3,380 feet (1,030 m). US 82 leads east 64 miles (103 km) to Lovington and west 110 miles (180 km) to Alamogordo, while US 285 leads north 40 miles (64 km) to Roswell and south 36 miles (58 km) to Carlsbad, the Eddy County seat.

McKinley County, New Mexico

McKinley County is a county in the northwestern section of the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 71,492.[1] Its county seat is Gallup.[2] The county was created in 1901 and named for President William McKinley.[3]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,455 square miles (14,130 km2), of which 5,450 square miles (14,100 km2) is land and 5.5 square miles (14 km2) (0.1%) is water.[4]

As of the 2000 census,[10] there were 74,798 people, 21,476 households, and 16,686 families residing in the county. The population density was 14 people per square mile (5/km²). There were 26,718 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 74.72% Native American, 16.39% White, 0.46% Asian, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.47% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. 12.40% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Rio Arriba County, New Mexico

Rio Arriba County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 40,246.[1] Its county seat is Tierra Amarilla.[2] Its northern border is the Colorado state line.

The county was one of nine originally created for the Territory of New Mexico in 1852. Originally extending west to the California line, it included the site of present-day Las Vegas, Nevada.[3] The county seat was initially sited at San Pedro de Chamita, and shortly afterwards at Los Luceros. In 1860 the seat was moved to Plaza del Alcalde. Since 1880 Tierra Amarilla has been the county seat.[4]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,896 square miles (15,270 km2), of which 5,861 square miles (15,180 km2) are land and 35 square miles (91 km2) (0.6%) are water.[5] It is the fifth-largest county in New Mexico by area. The highest point in the county is the summit of Truchas Peak at 13,102 feet (3,993 m).

Vaughn, New Mexico

Vaughn is a town in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 446 at the 2010 census,[2] down from 539 at the 2000 census. It is located at an intersection of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroad lines.

Vaughn was established in the early 20th century as a Southern Pacific Railroad town. The town's importance grew when a second railroad, the Eastern Railway of New Mexico (an Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line from Belen to Clovis), was completed in 1907 with Vaughn as a division point. A large two-story depot, a roundhouse, and a Harvey House hotel were constructed shortly thereafter. Vaughn was incorporated in 1919 and in 1920 had a population of 888, according to the U.S. census.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff's Department, New Mexico Rangers,[3] the New Mexico State Police and Motor Transportation Police and the Vaughn Police Department[4] (presently a one-man agency) all patrol the town, which, according to the United States Homeland Security, is a known drug-smuggling route.

Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico

Zuni Pueblo (Zuni: Shiwinna, also Zuñi Pueblo and Pueblo de Zuñi) is a census-designated place (CDP) in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 6,302 as of the 2010 Census.[1] It is inhabited largely by members of the Zuni people.

The first contact with Europeans occurred in 1539 in the ancient village of Hawikku when Esteban, an Arab/Berber of Moroccan origin, entered Zuni territory seeking the fabled "Seven Cities of Cibola."[2]

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 6,367 people, 1,488 households, and 1,334 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 720.0 people per square mile (278.1/km²). There were 1,622 housing units at an average density of 183.4 per square mile (70.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.03% Native American, 2.12% White, 2.01% Hispanic or Latino, 0.03% African American, 0.03% Asian, 0.30% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races.

Socorro County, New Mexico

Socorro County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,866.[1] The county seat is Socorro.[2] The county was formed in 1852 as one of the original nine counties of New Mexico Territory.[3][4] Socorro was originally the name given to a Native American village (see: Puebloan peoples) by Don Juan de Oñate in 1598. Having received vitally needed food and assistance from the native population, Oñate named the pueblo Socorro ("succor" in English).

Socorro County is home to multiple scientific research institutions including New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and its associated Very Large Array, the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, and the Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research. Federal public lands in Socorro County include parts of the Cibola National Forest, the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Socorro Field Office, parts of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, and parts of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail.

Socorro County's history is intimately linked with the rich history of the surrounding area. Basham noted in his report documenting the archeological history of the Cibola National Forest’s Magdalena Ranger District, which is almost entirely within Socorro County, that “[t]he heritage resources on the district are diverse and representative of nearly every prominent human evolutionary event known to anthropology. Evidence for human use of district lands date back 14,000 years to the Paleoindian period providing glimpses into the peopling of the New World and megafaunal extinction.“[5] Much of the now Magdalena Ranger District were a province of the Apache. Bands of Apache effectively controlled the Magdalena-Datil region from the seventeenth century until they were defeated in the Apache Wars in the late nineteenth century.[5]

Black Mesa Winery

Black Mesa Winery is an American winery in Velarde, New Mexico, founded in 1992. In 2014, Three of Black Mesa's vintages won high awards at the 15th Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition.[1] It is known for its chocolate-infused red wine, Black Beauty.[2]

Black Mesa produces over twenty-five varieties of New Mexican wine. The winery has a tasting room is at Mile Marker 15, on Highway 68 in Velarde NM. There is also a tasting room in Taos, New Mexico on Ledoux Street, .[3]
