Searchlight, Nevada

Searchlight is an unincorporated town[1] and census-designated place (CDP) in Clark County, Nevada, United States, at the topographic saddle between two mountain ranges. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 539.[2]

According to former Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who has written extensively about his hometown, the most likely story as to how the town received its name was that when George Frederick Colton was looking for gold in the area in 1897, he supposedly said that it would take a searchlight to find gold ore there.[citation needed] Shortly thereafter he found gold, leading to a boom era when Searchlight had a larger population than Las Vegas. At the time, it was in Lincoln County, Nevada. As talk surfaced for carving Clark County, Nevada out of Lincoln County, Searchlight was initially considered to be the county seat.[citation needed] Between 1907 and 1910 the gold mines produced $7 million in gold and other precious minerals, and the town had a population of about 1,500. The ore was shipped to Barnwell via the Barnwell and Searchlight Railway.

Other stories on the origin of the name include a story that Colton was lighting a Searchlight brand match when he discovered the gold ore. Reid dismisses this story, saying that the Searchlight matches were not available in 1898. Yet another story says that Colton thought the area would be a good place because it was on a hill. Colton's mine was called the Duplex, because the gold ore was found on two levels.[3][4]

Wadsworth, Nevada

Wadsworth is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. The population was 834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General James S. Wadsworth, a Civil War general killed at the battle of the Wilderness in 1864. It was given this name by Leland Stanford of the Central Pacific Railroad as a favor to General Irvin McDowell,[1] whom Wadsworth had served under during the Civil War.[2]

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 881 people, 328 households, and 225 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 237.7 people per square mile (91.7/km²). There were 360 housing units at an average density of 97.1 per square mile (37.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 28.94% White, 0.11% African American, 64.81% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 3.75% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.03% of the population.

There were 328 households out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.3% were married couples living together, 23.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.16.

Carson City, Nevada

Carson City is an independent city in and the capital of the US state of Nevada, named after the mountain man Kit Carson. As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,274.[2] The majority of the town's population lives in Eagle Valley, on the eastern edge of the Carson Range, a branch of the Sierra Nevada, about 30 miles (50 km) south of Reno.

The town began as a stopover for California-bound emigrants, but developed into a city with the Comstock Lode, a silver strike in the mountains to the northeast. The city has served as Nevada's capital since statehood in 1864; for much of its history it was a hub for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the tracks were removed in 1950. Before 1969, Carson City was the county seat of Ormsby County. The county was abolished that year, and its territory merged with Carson City to form the Consolidated Municipality of Carson City.[3] With the consolidation, the city limits extend west across the Sierra Nevada to the California state line in the middle of Lake Tahoe. Like other independent cities in the United States, it is treated as a county-equivalent for census purposes.

The first European Americans to arrive in what is now known as Eagle Valley were John C. Frémont and his exploration party in January 1843.[5] Fremont named the river flowing through the valley Carson River in honor of Kit Carson, the mountain man and scout he had hired for his expedition. Later, settlers named the area Washoe in reference to the indigenous people.[6]

Washoe Valley, Nevada

Washoe Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. It corresponds closely to the unincorporated community of New Washoe City. The population was 3,019 at the 2010 census.[1] It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP takes its name from the Washoe Valley, a region between Reno and Carson City centered on Washoe Lake.

The Washoe Valley CDP is located at 39°17′46″N 119°46′33″W / 39.29611°N 119.77583°W / 39.29611; -119.77583 (39.2963, −119.7760), to the east of Washoe Lake. Eastlake Boulevard is the main road through the community, leading both north and south to U.S. Route 395, the main highway through the valley.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,019 people, 1,249 households, and 868 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 592.0 people per square mile (230.5/km²). There were 1,311 housing units at an average density of 257.1 per square mile (100.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.6% White, 0.5% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 1.5% some other race, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.1% of the population.[2]

North Las Vegas, Nevada

North Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States, in the Las Vegas Valley. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 216,961,[3] with an estimated population of 249,180 in 2017.[4] The city was incorporated on May 16, 1946. It is in the Las Vegas–Paradise, NV MSA and is the fourth largest city in the state of Nevada.

Located in the southwestern United States in the Mojave Desert, North Las Vegas sits north and east of Las Vegas. According to the United States Census Bureau, North Las Vegas has a total area of 101.4 square miles (262.6 km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.04%, is water.[3] In the Las Vegas Valley, several mountain ranges are nearby.

Due to its location within the Mojave Desert, North Las Vegas has a desert climate. Temperatures are generally mild in the winter and hot in the summer. Like most of the hot deserts of the United States, snowfall only occurs once every few years on average. In winter, temperatures rarely fall below freezing. In the summer, monsoons can reach the area, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Silver Springs, Nevada

Silver Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lyon County, Nevada, United States at the intersection of U.S. 50 (California Trail) and U.S. 95A. The population was 5,296 at the 2010 census. Lahontan Reservoir, Lahontan State Recreation Area and historic Fort Churchill State Historic Park are all located nearby. The area is served by the Silver Springs Airport.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 4,708 people, 1,766 households, and 1,227 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 65.0 people per square mile (25.1/km2). There were 1,935 housing units at an average density of 26.7 per square mile (10.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91.67% White, 1.21% African American, 1.83% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 3.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.63% of the population.

There were 1,766 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.02.

Filip Tysander

After graduating from high school, Tysander ran an online retail business with a necktie and plastic watch web shop. In 2006, when Tysander was backpacking in Australia, he met a traveler by the name of Daniel Wellington who was wearing a Rolex Submariner with a classic Nato watch band.[4] The simplicity of the watch inspired Tysander to create his own watch brand, named after the Englishman he met.[5]

Tysander launched the Daniel Wellington brand after he had graduated from university and also spent five years working in the watch industry via his old online business, Neptune Design.[7] Daniel Wellington grew due to its online advertising strategy and campaigns through social media.[5]

Tysander invested $15,000 to start the Daniel Wellington brand. In 2011, he sold the first Daniel Wellington Watch. By 2014, Daniel Wellington had sold over one million watches and made $70 million in revenue.[4] In 2016, Daniel Wellington made USD $230 million in revenue and $111.5 million in profit.[8] Tysander owns 100% of the company.[8]

Nevada State Route 293

SR 293 begins at a Nevada Department of Transportation monument in the north-central portion of Humboldt County, just a few miles east of the Kings River.[1][2] From there, the route heads east through a mountain pass and then southward. After crossing the Quinn River, SR 293 heads eastward through the Quinn River Valley to its terminus at US 95 at the town of Orovada.[2]

The road first appears on official state maps 1968, although it was not labeled as being part of Nevada's numbered highway system at that time.[3] The highway was fully paved by 1971, but still had no route number on the state map.[4] The entire road was removed from state highway maps entirely beginning with the 1973 edition.[5] Despite this, the highway officially became State Route 293 on July 1, 1976, when Nevada officials began renumbering the state's numbered routes.[6] The road returned to the state highway map, complete with the SR 293 designation, in the 1982 edition.[7]

Elliott Management Corporation

It serves as the management affiliate of American hedge funds flagship Elliott Associates L.P. and Elliott International Limited. The Elliott Corporation was founded by Paul Singer, who also serves as CEO of the management company, based in New York City. From inception, Elliott has generated for its investors a 14.6% net compound annual return, compared to 10.9% for the S&P 500 stock index, and now has more than US$34 billion in assets under management.[3][4] As of the first quarter of 2015, Elliott's portfolio is worth over $8 billion.[5][6] By 2009 "more than one-third of Elliott’s portfolio was concentrated in distressed securities, typically in the debt of bankrupt or near-bankrupt companies."[7] Elliott has widely been described as a vulture fund.[8][9][10][11]

Paul Singer created Elliott Associates in January 1977,[12] starting with $1.3 million from friends and family. Choosing the Elliott brand as it is his middle name.[13] In its earliest years, the firm focused on convertible arbitrage. Since the 1987 stock market crash and early 1990s recession, however, the firm has transitioned into a multi-strategy hedge fund.[14][15] Elliott Associates manages $8.6 billion and is Elliott Management's primary domestic fund.[16]

Elliott is noted for its relatively high returns and low volatility. The New York Times has called Paul Singer "one of the most revered" hedge fund managers on Wall Street.[7] Elliott returns have generally outpaced the annual growth of the S&P 500. Describing Singer in 2012 as "one of the smartest and toughest money managers in the business," Fortune noted that over the previous 35 years, he had "produced an extraordinary 14% average annual return after fees, nearly double the price appreciation of the S&P 500."[13] From inception, Elliott has generated for its investors a 14.6% net compound annual return, compared to 10.9% for the S&P 500 stock index,[17] while having only one-third of the index's volatility.[18] The firm is currently closed to new investors. As of mid-2008, Elliott counted 175 employees in New York City, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong[15] and is one of the oldest hedge funds under continuous management.[19]

Wells, Nevada

Wells is a small city in Elko County, in northeast Nevada in the western United States. The population was 1,292 at the 2010 census. Wells is located at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 93, approximately 50 miles (80 km) east of Elko and is part of the Elko micropolitan area.

The site of Wells began as a place called Humboldt Wells along the trail to California.[2] It was subsequently founded as a railroad town along the original Transcontinental Railroad, and was once a stopover for passenger trains. The Humboldt River has its source in springs and a swampy area just west of the city that today is called Humboldt Wells. In the late 19th century, Humboldt Wells was burning down, and in a frantic plea for help, a telegraph was sent that said, "Wells is burning". After this the town was rebuilt and simply referred to as 'Wells'.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred near Wells at 6:16 A.M. on February 21, 2008. Because of its proximity of the epicenter, Wells experienced significant damage. The earthquake originated 9 km below the surface, with its epicenter only 12 miles (19 km) distant from Wells, at 41.077, 114.752.[3]
